Auto Sales healthy in 2010

Canadians purchased more than 1.5 million cars and light trucks in 2010, an increase of 6.6 per cent over 2009, according to industry analyst Dennis DesRosiers. Sales in December were essentially the same as in December 2009.
“2010 was healthy but still well below the levels achieved in 2005 to 2008,” DesRosiers said. “Canada still has a long way to go before we are totally out of this light vehicle sales slump. Sales however were slightly better than what we and others forecast a year ago when we were predicting sales up only two or three per cent.” DesRosiers said that the higher-than-predicted sales were due to incentives, which he said were at an unprecedented level.
