Sales of new cars, trucks, fell in November: as per StatsCan

Published on Monday, January 16, 2012

Statistics Canada says sales of new motor vehicles slipped one per cent in November to 137,640 units.

The drop partly offset gains in September and October.

Preliminary industry data for December indicate that sales of new motor vehicles decreased another three per cent in that month.

Sales fell for both trucks and passenger cars in November.

November sales of minivans, sport-utility vehicles, light and heavy trucks, vans and buses were down 1.3 per cent to 80,460.

Passenger car sales decreased 0.5 per cent to 57,180 units.

A 1.4 per cent drop in sales of North-American built cars was partly offset by a 1.0 per cent increase in sales of cars built overseas.

New vehicle sales were down in eight provinces in November.

Higher sales in Quebec and Ontario were more than offset by declines in the other provinces.

Quebec sales grew by 2.5 per cent, a third consecutive monthly increase, while Ontario sales inched up 0.9 per cent.

Sales were off 3.6 per cent in Alberta, 4.8 per cent in British Columbia and 9.9 per cent in Nova Scotia.
